There are many things that symbolize Peru but one of the oddest ones at first glance has to be the Peruvian [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Hairless, also referred to as the dog of the Incas. They generally [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] have no body hair although they may have some tufts of it on the top of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the head, on the feet or on the tip of the tail. You will often see them sporting mohawks, making for an even more interesting look on a dog with no fur.
Although it is referred to as an Incan dog, it was actually kept long before that by other civilizations in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Peru. There are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] artistic renderings of them as early as 750 AD. Not only are can they be seen on ceramics from the time of the Vicus and the Chavin, their skeletons have been found in Moche tombs. The Mochica people looked on them as guides and guardians for the dead. They were also used by pre-Incan [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] peoples for hunting and kept by them and the Incas as pets.
The Spanish discovered these dogs when they arrived in Peru and some were taken back to Europe. The conquistadors brought with them large war dogs and would sometimes amuse themselves by letting them attack the smaller native dogs.
They Spanish also reported that the Incas kept the lighter colored dogs inside during the day in rooms to protect them from the sun. As they were kept in rooms full of orchids and allowed out [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] at night, they were also called Flower Dogs, Inca Orchid dogs or Moonflower dogs. There is currently a breed called the Inca Orchid dog, however, this is not the same as the original Peruvian hairless.
The mountain areas of the country are too cold [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] for them and, therefore, they were primarily a dog of the coast although you can know see them in all areas of Peru. Often, they will have coats on to keep them warm. One of their mannerisms is that they like blankets and, if given one, will [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] get in the habit of taking it with them from one place to another in the house.
Folklore has it that sleeping with one of these dogs can help with asthma and other disorders. They can be quite comfortable to sleep with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in areas that are colder because they feel hot to the touch. For these reason, they have also been recommended for people with rheumatism. While they may or may not help with asthma, the lack of hair may make them appealing to someone who as allergies or breathing problems.
The lack of hair, of course, make them popular for other people who want both a dog and a clean home. In addition to the obvious characteristic of not being shedders, they also [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are not droolers, adding to their appeal in this regard. They are also smart, friendly and good with children, making them worth considering for families if time is taken to train them properly.
In 2001, the Peruvian government gave these dogs national heritage status in an effort to help conserve the breed from extinction.
